Local protesters take fight to protect greenbelt land to Archbishop's Palace in London
Posted by Simon Reevell, MP for Dewsbury, at 15:35, Thu 22 March 2012:
The Archbishop of Canterbury is on the Board of Governors of the Church Commissioners who own greenbelt land at Chidswell and Thornhill Lees. The land was only purchased last summer and the Commissioners stand to make millions by selling it to Kirklees who will build on it as part of their controversial Local Development Framework proposals.
Thousands of local people have signed a petition calling on the Church Commissioners not to sell the land to Kirklees.
With over 2,400 signatures, the petition was delivered to Lambeth Palace by Rod Lilley, Chairman of the Chidswell Action Group, Bill Beattie, Secretary of the Thornhill Lees Community Action Group and Mark Eastwood, Conservative candidate for Dewsbury East, accompanied by Simon Reevell MP and Dewsbury South Cllr Khizar Iqbal.
Simon said, “Dewsbury has sent a clear message to the Archbishop of Canterbury that it opposes the development on greenbelt land at Chidswell and Thornhill Lees. The Archbishop has spoken out in favour of green policies and against reckless and selfish capitalism. I hope that he will tell the other Church Commissioners that they must listen to the people of Chidswell and Thornhill Lees. This is the perfect opportunity for him to practise what he has preached.”

So what happened did the Archbishop listen? Thought Kirklees had no money? They want to sort out what they've got already, look at old Saville Arms, corner of Mill Street East and Saville Road, what a mess but a council opportuniy, converted to flats on the edge of Saville Town and Dewsbury Town with off street parking, local shops and transport links, how can the council not CPO it when they are so short of properties? Rebuild the town, save the green land.
