Simon Reevell MP urges the Prime Minister to protect the countryside from inappropriate development

Posted by Simon Reevell, MP for Dewsbury, at 15:32, Thu 22 March 2012:

Simon Reevell, the Member of Parliament for Dewsbury, has signed a letter to the Prime Minister expressing concern over the drafting of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

The letter to the Prime Minister was signed by 45 Coalition Members of Parliament, including Dewsbury’s own MP.

The letter supports a simpler planning system with more local control but states that this should not come at the expense of the ability of planning to protect and enhance the environment.

The 45 MPs call for the final version of the NPPF to contain explicit reference to the need to use suitable brownfield land for development before green fields in order to prevent unsustainable urban sprawl. The letter also demands a commitment to genuinely sustainable development that does not prioritise short term economic interests over long term quality of life and wellbeing.

After signing the letter, Simon said, “The local reaction to the proposed development in Chidswell and Thornhill Lees has highlighted how much we all value the countryside around us.”

“I have signed the letter to the Prime Minster to ensure that as the NPPF is drawn up, he has no doubt about how much I value greenbelt land around towns like Dewsbury and the wider countryside in places such as Denby Dale and Kirkburton.”
