Simon Reevell MP welcomes Heritage Lottery funding for urgent repairs to St Michael and All Angels in Thornhill

Posted by Simon Reevell, MP for Dewsbury, at 14:23, Fri 2 March 2012:

The local MP for Dewsbury has welcomed the news that the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £98,000 of funding to support urgent repairs to St Michael and All Angels, the parish church in Thornhill.

The church is Grade 1 listed and is mentioned in Simon Jenkins’ book of ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’.

The grant of £98,000 will enable repairs to be carried out to the medieval east window of the Savile chapel and to three monuments in the church.

The money is from the Repair Grants for Places of Worship scheme which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and administered by English Heritage.

Simon said, “Britain’s Christian heritage is a cornerstone of our laws and values. I very much welcome the news that £98,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund will be used so that urgent repairs can be carried out at St Michael and All Angels.”

“I had the pleasure of going to the church in December 2010 for the Christmas Tree Festival. It is already a wonderful building and the money will fund restoration which will improve it even further.”
