Post on the Queen 26/01/2012
Posted by Jacob Rees-Mogg, MP for North East Somerset, at 16:21, Thu 26 January 2012:
The date of the Queen’s accession to the throne is 6th February. As the United Kingdom cannot be without a monarch Her Majesty succeeded her father at the moment of his death. Thus for her there must be a poignancy to the anniversary which we are about to celebrate.
From the conquest in 1066 England has had forty monarchs (excluding Matilda, Lady Jane Grey and counting William III and Mary II as one) of whom only two have reached the landmark of a diamond jubilee – Queen Victoria and our current Queen. To commemorate this I will devote the next four articles to the importance of the institution of the monarchy and of Her Majesty.
There are two advantages to the spirit of the nation from our system. The first is that the monarch is the focus of the nation. The Queen can unite all elements of society as a centre of loyalty in a way no politician can. Presidents are either active politicians who divide the country along political lines or superannuated ones of such dullness that they arouse no passion for the country.
The next benefit is the link to our history. Although the list of sovereigns tends to start with William the Conqueror the Queen is descended through Henry I’s marriage from Alfred the Great and the Anglo Saxon Kings. This takes England’s reigning family back to the edges of the Dark Ages and is a reminder of our origins and of the nation’s greatness. It gives a focus for national pride as well as a feeling of security and stability in our institutions. Thus the monarchy is the cornerstone of the nation.
