Holocaust Memorial Day
Posted by Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, at 16:12, Mon 16 January 2012:
This week I signed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons honouring those who died during the Holocaust. I think it is important to ensure that as time moves on no-one forgets the immense suffering of the Holocaust.
I pay tribute to the extraordinary men and women who, having survived the Holocaust, work - with the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Outreach programme - to educate young people about what they endured.
This year, Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau – and is an important opportunity to remember the victims of genocide. I encourage all constituents to mark the day and to commit to speaking out against prejudice in all its forms.
On Saturday I will be attending a memorial service in Harrogate organised by the Harrogate Hebrew Congregation. The service will be addressed by Arek Hersh, a Holocaust survivor. I attended last year and the service was both moving and thought-provoking. I am sure that this year will bring forward very similar emotions in those marking the day or attending one of the many events organised to remember the Holocaust.
