Simon Reevell MP opens an exciting new renewable electricity plant in Emley
Posted by Simon Reevell, MP for Dewsbury, at 17:18, Fri 2 December 2011:
The local MP Simon Reevell has opened an anaerobic digestion clean electricity plant at Clayton Hall Farm.
Simon cut the ribbon and declared the plant open, making it the first facility of its kind in Yorkshire. It will be capable of processing around 2,000 tonnes of food waste a year and will generate enough energy to power 650 homes.
The opening today marked the culmination of five years of hard work since Neil Gemmell first thought about diversifying from rearing livestock at his farm to develop an anaerobic digestion clean electricity plant using both energy crops and food waste.
The plant was partially funded by the not-for-profit company CO2Sense who provided a repayable investment of £600,000 which will be repaid once the plant is generating income. They will then use the money to re-invest in other renewable energy developments. To date, the company has invested in 6% of the renewable energy capacity in Yorkshire. The rest of the funding for the plant has come from a loan from HSBC and a hire-purchase agreement with the manufacturers of the combined heat and power and pasteuriser systems.
Simon said, “I was delighted to be invited to open the plant and was pleased to see so many people there. The project is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when the banks are prepared to lend and when the private sector combines with a not-for-profit enterprise.”
“The plant demonstrates that green projects can have significant local support if they are the right project at the right time. The plant at Clayton Hall is certainly the right project at the right time which is why I was pleased to open it earlier today.”

A wonderful beginning in the area and hopefully there will be more to come. But how then do you justify under 'Green matters' allowing green farm land on the outskirts of Mirfield to be used for a David Brown factory whenthere are acres of disused factory units throughout Kirklees!

thank goodness we are investing in something other than inefficient and grotesquely intrusive wind turbines for a change!

Dear David,
The David Brown proposals have come in under the previous Government's development plans. The new LDF regime devolves more power to the local area and the Conservative plans in Kirklees are for no building to take place on green belt land.
Kind regards, Simon
