An Evening with Arlene McCarthy MEP: Banking Reform and Food Speculation

Posted by Alison McGovern, MP for Wirral South, at 22:24, Tue 14 June 2011:

Friday 1 July 2011, 18:45 – 20:30 Alexander Hall, Rocky Lane, Heswall. CH60 0BY (Fairtrade refreshments to be provided)

I would like to invite you to join me for an evening with Arlene McCarthy MEP.

Arlene is a driving force behind new legislation to regulate banks and hedge funds who are making money gambling on the price of food. This speculation by the banks can lead to sharp increases and instability in food prices which will always hit the poorest hardest.

Arlene McCarthy was first elected to the European Parliament in 1994 and has been a Labour MEP for the North West region since 1999. Following elections to the new 2009 European Parliament, Arlene is the Vice Chair of the important Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, which is responsible for the economic policies of the Union and the regulation of financial services.

Arlene also supports calls for a financial transaction tax (FTT) or ‘Robin Hood Tax’. A FTT could have positive benefits such as cutting dangerous speculation, raising money to meet global development and climate change mitigation commitments, and raising money to meet domestic priorities for investing in our economic future.

This talk should be of interest to

• Those who have supported World Development Movement’s Betting on Hunger campaign

• Supporters of Oxfam’s new Grow campaign – in the summary of their “Growing a better future” report Oxfam identifies the warning signs of a major world food crisis.

• Campaigners for Fair Trade and Trade Justice.

If you would like to join me at this free event, please let me know by filling out the form on my website at www.alisonmcgovern.org.uk/arlenemccarthy
