No to Pinkham Way campaign
Posted by David Burrowes, MP for Enfield, Southgate, at 09:11, Mon 13 June 2011:
The current work on improvements to the A406 and New Southgate area will mean that some of the most neglected parts of my constituency can look forward to being the most regenerated. However the plans to build Britain's biggest waste management site at Pinkham Way threatens this optimistic outlook.
The prospect of hundreds of waste trucks delivering North London's waste to the doorstep of this area is of great concern. For too long the N11 part of my constituency has been the victim of being at the back end of three boroughs. The proposal for the waste facility takes advantage of this location with a site in "no mans land" where planning responsibility and land ownership is divided. The scale of the Pinkham Way waste facility will take us in the wrong direction at the wrong time.
We have all fought too long and too hard for the improvements to the North Circular Road and New Southgate only to see the area dumped upon. I am pleased that other politicians like Andy Hemsted (your local GLA candidate), Lynne Featherstone MP and Theresa Villiers MP are also opposing the plans.
Please support my Enfield campaign to say 'NO to Pinkham Way' by:
(1) Supporting my campaign on the Digital Democracy Website(www.digitaldemocracy.org.uk)
(2) Attending the public meeting at 7:00pm on Friday 17th June taking place at Broomfield School, 56 Wilmer Way London, N14 7HY
(3) Signing my online petition (www.davidburrowes.com)
I hope to see you at the meeting on 17th June and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.
Best wishes
David

Dear David,
Thank you for bringing to my attention the waste management site proposal at Pinkham way.
Whilst I have my concerns with any large facility, I am also pragmatic.
The facility will be close to the North Circular for transport links. Would be even better if the closeness to the railway could be utilised for taking away rubbish and so reducing the burden on the roads; would you agree?
To one side of the site (East) is a large railway line. To the south, is a Golf course. To the North is the North Circular and a retail Park To the West is a Park and residential areas. So these are the only houses which could be immediately affected.
In an ideal world we would not produce rubbish. Supermarkets wouldn't over package their items. Couriers wouldn't use so much packaging as would manufacturers of consumables. But they do. And that rubbish needs to be managed.
Now to me, this seems a relatively good location for a site of this nature, with reservations of course.
But EVERY ONE OF US PRODUCES WASTE. Consequently we need to have the facilities to manage our collective waste and to process it accordingly, hopefully sending it off for recycling where ever possible. This reminds me of a campaign I was aware of recently to stop a local village having another mobile phone mast installed. Yet the inhabitants were complaining of poor mobile phone coverage, and even used their mobile phones to organise their campaign.
It seems every one wants the advantages of modern society, to take advantage of technology, yet are quick to say no to the 'down sides' of modern technology, life style be it mobile phone masts, air ports, petrol stations or waste management plants!.
In my view some what hypocritical.
I would also love to know where YOU would propose to move the location?
As a fresh young politician and MP (I have voted for you twice) I hope you do not fall into the bad habits of modern society which is very much applicable to politics of today. If you strongly feel that Pinkham way is not a good location, then rather send negative campaign emails saying NO, why don't you prose alternative locations? Politicians of all parties are very good at negative campaigning. Discussions with my younger work colleagues both at work and in the TA have all expressed their quiet dissatisfaction with politics and so refuse to vote in any form of election, local, national or referendum. One of their reasons was the 'negative' campaigning that is so often employed.
It is so easy to say no. Often a simple No does not help the debate, discussion. We need to know what other options are there for the facility, with the advantages and disadvantages of each site.
Then a decision can be based on the facts, and options.available to us all.
I hope to hear from you, with your thoughts, and proposals where the Site should be located instead of Pinkham way. My Post code is N11 and will be a 5 minute walk for me. So I will be affected, mainly by a possible increase in vehicular traffic. But there is so much around here any way, will it make any real difference? I suspect not.
Yours Sincerely
Adrian Jenkins
