NHS Reforms
Posted by Roger Godsiff, MP for Birmingham, Hall Green, at 09:13, Thu 5 May 2011:
I have received a huge number of letters and emails from different people who are concerned about various aspects of the Government’s proposals and I have responded to everybody who has contacted me setting out exactly what my views are on the Government’s proposals.
The only people who can now stop the proposals are medical professionals and public opinion and although the Coalition say that they are now going to ‘pause’ and ‘listen to people’s concerns’ I suspect that what they really intend to is to try and give themselves more time to lecture the public on why they are initiating these unnecessary and destructive changes and, particularly so far as the Lib.Dems are concerned, to delay the Health and Care Bill until after the Referendum and local elections on the 5th May when they fear public retribution for what they are proposing.
The conservatives have always wanted to ‘roll back the state’ and to undermine the founding principles of the NHS and their intentions were cynically revealed by Michael Portillo when asked by Andrew Neal on the BBC’s ‘This Week programme’ why the Government had not told us about their plans for the NHS prior to the election. Portillo responded ‘because they didn’t believe they could win the election if they told you what they were going to do. People are so wedded to the NHS. It’s the nearest thing to a national religion sacred cow’. This says it all!

Had Labour won just a few more seats and formed a Lib-Lab coalition, they'd still have needed to clear up the same financial mess created by Gordon Brown. They too would have concealed what they would have needed to do before the election and then made the same old weak excuses for having done so. The problem is that in the REAL world DEBT is the art of having today what we don't wish to have to pay for tomorrow. Does the Labour Party realise this? Do they also realise that the public sector costs us a lot more than we can afford to pay for, seemingly a concept that the Tories have a better understanding of. Perhaps that is why they are having to do what they are doing now. I sometimes wonder how Gordon Brown manages to sleep at night.

NUS, what NHS? Ask the GPs not to prescribe medicines and they will be redudant. Most of the drugs prescribed are not beneficial and causes a lot of side effects. I have seen seniors being prescribed several drugs which may even prove fatal. I have stopped taking prescipttion medicines, in stead I take only one herbal medicine and I have saved NUS a lot of money. This also means I have stopped visiting my GP.

I have been through the last tory government and what a disater that was. I remember being in college and being told to pay the poll tax and thats when i had no source of income, also the teachers strikes in the late 80s. It seems whenever the tories get in they try to make the decent hard working class person suffer as much as possible. Why dont you pick on the bankers, who bought this country to its knees-ohh no lets give them bonuses. I am fed up working so hard for nothing. Leaves our beloved NHS alone, why not tackle the proper issues for example: 1. If your not working only one child supported by the state. 2. No bonuses for the bankers ubtil the bank is out of public ownership. 3. Stop sending our beloved troops to fight illegal wars. 4. Stop sending youngsters to prisons, they should be recruited into the army. 5. People on Jobseekers allowance - only for 1 year- then halve their payment for the next 6 months and then £0.00 after two years. 6. Make our MPs legally held responsible for the promises they make at election time.

Interesting observations by Tahir, the question is where is the problem? May be the capitalist system and the present political system, which ever party it may be, does not work and may be we need an alternative system. I see a lot of wastage and incompatancy and every one should work for his/her livelihood; free handout should stop as it makes people lazy. If migrants can work for hard jobs and less pay then why not the citizens?

Its obvious the vast majority of people are sick of politics and politicians, because time and time again this great nation of ours has been let down by the politicians, who promise them many things during the election campaign and when they get voted in what happens-'NOTHING'! Do you wonder why only about 40% of the people turns out to vote?

Personally I am blaming the whole system and not only the politicians and our MPs. Also, I am not inspired by those who are nominated by the parties to stand for election; how educated and competanat they are to lead the people of this country and this nation? Why UK is acting as a puppet to American's policy and whose agenda is to spread fear and occupy the nations across the globe? Why should we waste lives and money to fight the American war?

I have lived in a former British colony and know exactly what life is like without NHS. Please, please Mr Godsiff I urge you to do all that is necessary to stop this madness of the coalition of destroying the one good thing that separates us from the Americans.

Mr Godsiff,
Who will audit where and how the money is being spent by the GPs (if they have control of their own budgets). I do not agree any doctor/s that work for the NHS then should go and do private work - This demonstrates that these doctors are there to line their own pockets. You either work for the private sector or the NHS!

Why in the West do we need doctors and GPs and not in the third world countries where healthy diet, excercise and herbal medicines suffices. NHS is a wastage of tax payers money, GPs are educated using taxpayers money and are paid handsomely, medicines prescribed by GPs lines up the pockets of drug manufacturers and comes from taxpayers. Why no one seems to realise this reality?

Maybe back to good old socialism?

Tahir, personally I do not trust socialism, capitalism or communism, perhaps we need to pick and choose what is good within these systems and to adopt them to suit our needs. What we have learnt from bankers is greed and gambling with the money. How do the banks make money, the answer is mere speculation and betting on the future currency, stock market and currency movements. We have seen what happens when the banks get it wrong, the Govenments had to bail them out from taxpayers money. They should have been allowed to go bankrupt, at least it would have prevented the board of directors to ask for exhorbitant salaries and bonuses. The other solution is to tax them at 95% to prevent the greed.

Mr Godsiff,
Maybe the answer lies in the funding by different sections of society. My proposal is the longer you work and contribute to the NHS the less your contribution over time. New immigrants to the country should contribute more or have a surcharge every time they use the NHS, and what about the people who have retired abroad and just come here to use the NHS?

It is not only NHS but all the public sector organisations need to be re-examined to reduce possible fraud and incompatancy. Where should I start, and are the MPs and the government prepared to allow people like me access and listen to suggestions?
