Hear from your MP
Posted by Stewart Hosie, MP for Dundee East, at 08:00, Tue 26 April 2011:
Today will see the second reading of the Finance Bill. This will be the first of a number of opportunities to question in detail the decision of the UK Government to raid the North Sea Oil & Gas Sector of another £2 billion in tax every year.
It will be interesting to see if the Government actually listen to those in the sector who are concerned about this massive tax rise or if they will merely brush concerns about jobs and investment aside.
This is the first time I've used the HearFromYourMP facility.
I'll try to find the time to use it more often. But I'd be gateful to know if this is the kind of information which is useful to you.

I hope you use this more often and that the snp highlights this unfair tax on jobs in scotland

As an Oil and Gas sector professional this is absolutely insane. This is currently a very buoyant employment sector, quite possibly the only one at present in Scotland. The North East is crying out for people and there is a job shortage, and a number of operators have indicated that they will be comitting hundreds of millions of pounds into the North Sea infrastructure. I myself am operating on a £300million project. The new tax wont impact this as we are too far into the campaign, but, could put the skids on a number of massive jobs that the operators have indicated they wish to go ahead with. The extra tax could jeapordise all that investment and an extra £2billion would be a pittance compared to the potential losses incurred long term due to this unfeasibly stupid idea. I suspect basic arithmetic is beyond these people, to get out of recession, investment (which in many cases, the operators are willing to do) is required, this extra tax could well prevent its economic viability. Its unbelievably short sighted, makes no short (or long) term economic sense, will cost hundreds of jobs, and could spell the death knell for Scotlands most succesful industry.

I had not heard of this before (Hear from your MP) and it seems an excellent idea. I try to keep up with "The Week in Westminster" on the radio, but a personal input is always to be welcomed.

Excellent idea to keep up to date with my MP.
Regarding the subject text, I consider it incomprehensible that while Scotland is rich in oil resources we are being ripped off at the pumps for our fuel. Whilst the government milks the motoring public relentlessly the big oil conglomerates are equally opportunistic and make vast profits by playing the oil markets. There is no incentive to maintain stable prices when any increase in the price of a barrel of oil is seen as an easy opportunity to make even greater profits at the expense of a captive audience. Whilst making a show of a competitive industry the companies all operate a cartel which in essence is a monopoly. They also take money from the public purse and bleat like wounded sheep when they have to pay some back. The amount of tax breaks the oil companies receive would have been manna to our now defunct ship building industry. As far as the blackmail threat to walk away then let them. In making such statements they are nothing more than economic terrorists and good riddance. The Government cannot be held to ransom. In any event market forces and businesses love a vacuum and are only too willing to fill the gap. Bring it on. I do not believe for one minute the statements made regarding lost investment and lost jobs and neither should the government or the SNP. It's Scotland's oil and it's about time we had it back.

I feel this is just another example of Westminster using Scotland to their own ends; and for their own betterment at the expense of the Scottish resources, finances and ultimately the Scottish people. The quicker we have home rule the better.

I really like the ability to contact my MP via the internet. TBH I think it's ridiculous this kind of public interaction isn't mandatory or more streamlined.
Anyhoo, I don't have any problem 'raiding' the oil & gas industry for more taxes. They make obscene amounts of money.
The business leaders are crying foul about this, but thats precisely what any business leader will do. They say it will stifle deep sea investment but I sincerely doubt that, £2b is peanuts compared to the potential gains from these drilling operations.
I would like to see actual figures published of what these oil companies turn over and what their profits are, this allows the public to assess for themselves what the actual impact would be, rather than trusting the screams from oil industry tycoons.

I think this is a great idea. It would be interesting to hear our mps viewpoints particulary on local issues? This could be an interesting platform for discussion,s, with a proposed referendum ahead? Congrats to SNP on their election wins.
