Under-16s using Sunbeds

Posted by Sian James, MP for Swansea East, at 10:35, Sun 30 July 2006:

I am very concerned that children aged 16 years and under have easy walk-in access to unstaffed coin-operated tanning salons. Some operators of these salons are offering prices starting at just 25p. Children can therefore quite easily afford to use the equipment with their pocket money.

Unstaffed salons do not have trained staff to provide advice, assistance; and to restrict access to children or people who should not use a tanning bed. There is a reliance on posters to provide awareness on exposure to UV rays and skin types that are not appropriate for tanning. This is an unacceptable situation.

If we do not allow children to play the lottery; smoke; drink; or gamble on a fruit machine, then we shouldn't allow them to have access to equipment that will damage their young skin.

I have called on the Government to restrict the use of unstaffed coin-operated tanning equipment and to fine and prosecute operators of unstaffed coin-operated salons who allow children access to tanning equipment.
