Diane votes to save our public forests
Posted by Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, at 17:38, Fri 4 February 2011:
Over the past two weeks I have been absolutely inundated with messages of concern regarding the Government's plans to privatise national forests. The fact that I received over 650 emails on this issue highlights just how important it is to you, my constituents, and this sentiment is reflected across the entire nation.
This is a policy that has next to no public backing. That the Government neglected to consult either the local people that actually use these forests or the public at large, is revelatory of the type of arrogance this Tory-led Government now harbours.
I voted against the sell-off of our public forests to private interests and I will continue to monitor developments on this issue very closely as the bill progresses. As always if you would like to know more about the work I do in Parliament or would like to get in touch with me, please visit me at www.dianeabbott.org.uk and for those of you on Twitter, follow me @hackneyabbott.

Mmmm . . . did not the Labour government sell off part of the national forest estate? Did you vote against this?
Mmmm . . . hasn't a public consultation on this proposal just been launched? So contrary to what you say a consultation is now taking place.
The public at large (as opposed to an interested minority) really has no interest in this matter. We have no idea which forests are publicly owned and which are privately owned. Most people would think the ancient forests are in public ownership, but most of them are not.
The consultation document is worth reading for the information it contains. Better to do this and make an informed contribution to the debate rather than rely on the headlines.

Thank you for voting against the forest sell-0ff. I hope you will do as mcuh to save legal aid for the poorest in your constituency.
