What are your views on local policing?

Posted by Richard Burden, MP for Birmingham, Northfield, at 18:13, Wed 2 February 2011:

A number of residents have been in touch with me about the recent announcement by the government that they are cutting the police budget.

I also want to know what you think about local policing. Please let me know your views online at www.richardburden.com/local-policing.

The Chief Constable of West Midlands Police has confirmed that the cut to their budget will mean a reduction in the number of frontline policemen and women here in Birmingham.

Unfortunately it looks like the officers we are going to lose will be our most experienced ones. To make ends meet under the new budget the police will have to lay off those officers with over 30 years service. This is a real shame.

I know that across the Northfield constituency the change to neighbourhood policing, with one team responsible for one area and more visible policing using community support officers, has been a real success.

I will continue to fight against these changes in Parliament and locally. But in the meantime I think we must face head on how these changes will affect our community.

I will be holding a public meeting to discuss how we go forward from here. I will, of course be inviting the local police.

If you would like to receive an invitation once I have confirmed the time and place of this meeting then please go to www.richardburden.com/local-policing. You can also let me have your views on local policing and the cuts to police numbers.

Best wishes,

Richard Burden - Labour MP for Birmingham Northfield
