News and contact details from East Hants MP, Damian Hinds

The biggest issues I am hearing from East Hants residents about at the moment are the economy, the cost of fuel and the future of our forests and woodlands.
The government’s forests consultation has just come out this morning: www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/forests/index.htm. We need to ensure that both biodiversity and public access benefits are maintained, and I will be pressing hard on these points.
Last Thursday I had the opportunity to lead a debate, on life chances for disadvantaged children. Video here: http://tinyurl.com/69zmd2a.
Parliament has been busy on the committee stage of the EU Bill (which is being taken on the floor of the House). The next big bill coming is the Health & Social Care Bill (2nd reading this Monday), and then the Education Bill.
On the Education Select Committee we are just finishing our investigation on Behaviour & Discipline, close to completion on the report on OfStEd, and have just started looking into Youth Services.
A week today the backbench business committee has allocated time for a debate on Consumer Credit Regulation & Debt Management. This is a particular area of interest for me (I chair the all-party group on credit unions and am vice-chairman of the all-party group on debt). Although I do not support the motion being put forward, I am glad it is being debated, and will be hoping to “catch the Speaker’s eye” to speak.

You must not support the takover of Sky and the selling off of state owned forests.

Why can't we have an option on the forests of leaving them alone. The amount of money saved is small. I'm sorry to have to say it but a lot of selling off state owned assets has made money for a fortunate few and made things a lot worse for us. Railtrack, anyone?
I didn't know how friendly Mr Hunt was with Sky. Until the company pays taxes without employing off shore tax havens (options not available to small shop keepers and all of us on PAYE) Sky shouldn't be allowed to own more of the media in this country.
It can often take court proceedings with councils for parents to get funding to send their children to Treloars. I don't know if the recent government proposals will make this situation worse. The young people going to Treloars have a tough enough life already. Is funding for these students ring fenced?
