Energy Review
Posted by Denis Murphy, MP for Wansbeck, at 14:24, Wed 12 July 2006:
This week the Government have published an Energy Review dealing with the controversial issue of new nuclear power stations.
The review also covered renewable energy, micro generation and how as a nation we deal with climate change.
I am still a supporter of the coal mining industry and coal is used to generate nearly 40% of the UK's electricity generation.
I am of the opinion we need to invest in clean coal technology in carbon capture and sequestration in order to ensure coal can meet its environmental challenges and we should also invest heavily in energy conservation.
I would be interested to hear your views on nuclear power, renewable engergy, micro generation and climate change and energy conservation.

There is an argument for using nuclear because of the amount of carbon it produces. Though nuclear overall is not a viable option simply because there is no proven way of storing waste over the required time. It is probable that the nuclear option is linked with providing fissile material for depeleted uranium shells and actual nuclear bombs (trident in particular).
If coal can be used in a much cleaner form then that is an option I would be comfortable with.
I think the biggest point is energy conservation. Switching a telly or microwave of is one thing, getting rid of the flash car and cheap flights is another.
A couple of unrelated points:
What is your opinion on the the banning of protest around parliement? Also I thought sequestrate was a dirty word around NUM miners.
Is there a reason why Northumberland bands and banners don't go to Durham Gala?
Thanks
