Autism & Aspergers

As you will know I have taken a keen interest in autism and aspergers. ASD has a devastating impact on the quality of an individual’s life and it has an effect on their family.
Studies across the world have proved that the early detection of ASD gives the very best opportunity to relieve the condition. In some areas of the UK there have been improvements in the early identifying ASD. Best practice must be taken up across the whole country. We must also look abroad and see how other countries tackle the issue
I recently met man in his early 20s who only just been diagnosed. He had lost out a school because his problem had been missed. A few years back a survey by the NUT found that 44% of teachers are not confident teaching children with ASD and that 39% are not confident identifying children with ASD. We must increase specialist training to provide our teachers with these skills.
What have learned over the years is how diverse and divergent are the experiences of families coping with ASD. They all have their own, often difficult, story to tell. Please let me have your views
Lee Scott.

Hi Lee, great work in highlighting these conditions. Although I don't have first hand experience of anyone suffering from ASD, this is just the type of thing we should be investing in. Specialist teachers passing on their knowledge and giving support where necessary. Funding as ever is an issue and as a progressive society we need to look at asking those that are most fortunate to contribute the most.

Hello. Fortunately, I do not know anyone who suffers from ASD. I think the best course of action is to raise public awareness of the symptoms of this illness and what to look out for so people don't waste time in going to see their Doctor so an early diagnosis is made. Somehow funds need to be raised for research.
