Message from Catherine McKinnell MP

Thank you for signing up to 'Hear from Your MP' to receive updates from me as your Member of Parliament for Newcastle North.
I was incredibly proud to be first elected to represent our constituency in May 2010. I grew up in the West End of Newcastle, and my family goes back generations in this area - currently living throughout Newcastle North in Newburn, Denton, Lemington, Gosforth and Woolsington.
Since being elected I have worked hard on a significant number of different local, national and international issues on behalf of my constituents. I was also pleased to be appointed to the position of Shadow Solicitor General in October by the new Labour leader Ed Miliband - having previously worked as an employment lawyer for a Newcastle-based firm. This means holding the Attorney General and Solicitor General to account in the Commons, particularly to ensure that the policies of the Conservative-led Coalition are lawful. I wrote recently in this role for The Guardian newspaper, which you may find of interest: www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/libertycentral/2010/dec/06/fawcett-society-budget-legal-challenge-women
My other key area of work over recent months has been the introduction of my Apprenticeships and Skills (Public Procurement Contracts) Bill, which aims to ensure that companies winning large public procurement contracts commit to providing apprenticeship places. In what I am calling the 'Small Change, Big Difference' campaign, I believe this would be a cost-effective way of increasing the number of apprenticeships available across the country. My Bill has so far received the support of the Federation of Small Businesses, the TUC and several trade unions, the Federation of Master Builders, the Electrical Contractors' Association and, most recently, the previous Labour Government's Enterprise Champion, Lord Sugar. My Bill is due to have it Second Reading in the Commons on 11th February, and it would be great if you could show your support for my proposals by joining the Small Change, Big Difference Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.phpgid=108345242558973
