Local MP delighted with bypass funding

Posted by Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, at 08:47, Wed 12 July 2006:

Local MP, Graham Stuart, is delighted with the news that the Department of Transport will provide substantial funding for the East Riding Council’s £29.3m transport scheme which will cut traffic in the centre of Beverley.

Residents have been calling for a bypass around Beverley for years, to ease the congestion in the town centre and relieve the gridlock that brings Beverley to a grinding halt every day.

Graham, who lead a delegation including Cllr Symon Fraser and the authority’s forward planning manager, Paul Bellotti, to meet with Karen Buck, the former Transport Minister, said, “We were all hopeful after presenting the case to the Minister that the Department of Transport would approve the bid. This is excellent news and the Council must be congratulated after spending so much time and effort in ironing out the difficulties in the scheme after the bid was turned down in 2004. I am delighted that this time round we have been successful because this is so important for the town.”

Graham believes keeping the traffic away from the historic centre of Beverley is a priority. “This will not only ease congestion, but improve road safety and reduce pollution from gridlocked traffic. It will also improve the quality of life for the residents who have to endure the noise and backlog of cars and lorries throughout the day. This is a great day for the residents of Beverley.”
