Wallace and Gromit were welcomed to Midsomer Norton on Friday by a huge crowd who had braved the cold to begin their Christmas shopping and to see the famous pair switch on the lights. The excitement in the children’s faces was wonderful and a reminder for all that there is still great innocence and joy at Christmas. Father Christmas himself had popped over from Lapland with his reindeer and was an equal focus of attention. It was the perfect scene with the wintry landscape as it appears in a picture book but so rarely in reality. It was also an opportunity to enjoy the strong community spirit that the town has. Like the swan paddling hard so events such as these require a good deal of organisation from a dedicated few.
After the lights were turned on, Helena and I went on to the Working Men’s Club in Radstock to join a Christmas party for older people, none of whom seemed much older than me. Certainly as the dancing progressed (with my wife taking a greater role than I did) youth was definitely in their faces. Again it was a community-organised event that gave evident pleasure. In no sense was it political and I was pleased to see Councillors Eleanor Jackson and Rob Appleyard joining in the fun. Nonetheless, it was the Big Society in action and a reminder to remember one’s neighbour at a time that is festive for many but not for all and when the winter winds are a risk, especially to the elderly.
