Daylight Savings

Dear fellow local resident,
Thank you for signing up to the Hear from Your MP website. I think this is an excellent way to involve people in the political process, and I look forward to hearing your views on some of the subjects that Parliament will be discussing.
Since being re-elected in May, a lot has happened on local, national and international fronts. I was proud to be asked to serve as Minister for the Armed Forces in the Coalition Government, and whilst I have spent some time settling into my new role, I have already been able to visit our troops in Afghanistan.
The Coalition Government has had to take some tough decisions already, but I am confident that the Liberal Democrats are making their mark on policy – the abolition of ID cards, a pupil premium to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds and the raising the level at which people start to pay tax to over £7000 are all ideas lifted from our manifesto.
Next week is the second reading of a Private Members Bill which seeks to extend British Summer Time through the winter in order to save energy across the UK.
The Daylight Saving Bill seems to be gathering support from across the House, as well as from organisations like The AA, Saga and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, all of whom believe that extra hours of daylight will not only cut down on accidents, but also encourage people to do more activities in the evenings during the winter.
I think it will have many benefits for North Devon, not least for our tourism industry. I am keen to hear your views though before the debate takes place.
Once again, thank you for signing up to hear from me. If I can be of help or assistance on any issue, local or national, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me: The Castle Centre, Castle Street, Barnstaple, EX31 1DR or telephone 01271 328631. Please feel free to email me on: mail@nickharveymp.com or forward this email onto a friend.
Best Wishes,
Nick Harvey
P.S. My website www.nickharveymp.com is regularly updated with news and views and will keep you up to date with my work fighting for North Devon in Parliament.

We definitely need the Daylight Saving Bill, it will make life far easier in the winter where at least we'll be able to come home in the light and still have light to do things such as sports, walking etc.

I also believe that more daylight in the winter would be a better idea. Many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), due to lack of light; therefore this Bill could help those who are suffers. I also believe it could help cut energy bills for households and businesses. It could also help to cut accidents. Dusk is particularly difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists in dark clothing. It is currently starting to get dark when our young are coming home from school and college. This Bill would address this problem.
