Parliamentary Private Secretary appointment
Posted by Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, at 11:47, Thu 11 November 2010:
This week the coalition government announced appointments of a new set of Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPSs). I was surprised and honoured - after less than six months in Parliament - to be asked to become the PPS to Mark Prisk MP who is the Minister of State responsible for enterprise in the Department of Business, Industry and Skills (DBIS).
A PPS is not a well-known role among the public but is important nonetheless. They provide a link to backbench opinion in the Commons and through the backbenchers to the concerns of the public. Ministers choose their own PPS but each appointment must be approved by the Prime Minister. The role does not involve any increase in salary.
I will use my new role as a PPS in the Department of Business, Industry and Skills to speak out for local business and, more generally, the needs of the business community across the country. It is a real honour to be a part – even a very small part as a PPS - of the coalition team helping that economic recovery.

Congratulations on your appointment as a PPS, the first rung on the ladder.
This finally explains your unwillingness to stand up and be counted on the 'Baroness' Uddin issue.
Why would you wish to rock the parliamentary (gravy) boat with a promotion in the offing?
I quite understand.

Your party promised to repeal the Human Rights Act in the run up to the election and to replace it with something fit for purpose.
Your leader appears to have since reneged on this promise.
Are we to continue to see stories such as this: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/uk/article2846576.ece ?
Or will the government actually act?
I'd be grateful to hear whether you feel Mr Houston has had justice and what concrete action you will be taking to ensure that election promises are kept.
I do hope that your career progression hopes will not prevent you acting or expressing an honest opinion on this matter as, it did with the case of 'Baroness' Uddin.
