Dear Resident
Thank you for signing up to the HearFromYourMP website; it’s pleasing to know that people in St Albans are interested in my work in Parliament.
It is likely that you want to know about some of the issues that I am currently campaigning on.
Licensing Act
I’m not against people having a good time, but I do believe that residents are entitled to have a good night’s sleep. I am in support of a limited relaxation of the old licensing laws, but these must be restricted to appropriate places, and not applied universally without consideration of the existing make up of the area. I don’t believe that the new Act is flexible enough to allow residents a say in how they want their city centre to develop, and that is one of the main reasons why I am against the Act. I will be continuing to push the Government to reconsider their position, and look at revising the Act to allow residents a far greater say.
Housing
My surgery and postbag are filled with concerns about how we deliver affordable housing for families and young people. I am fighting for appropriate developments, which are supported by a proper infrastructure, and urging the Government to look again at the Tax system, including Stamp Duty, which is currently making buying a first house unaffordable.
Environment
I am constantly campaigning for a cleaner, greener environment; for a responsible approach to our water resources; and for more sustainable house building, which includes building houses that are more environmentally friendly.
In Parliament
I am very supportive of civil liberties and freedom of the individual, whilst still respecting the fact that we need a safe and secure country, and I have been opposing ID Cards and the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill, as I believe that both of these Bills will severely curtail civil liberties and individual freedoms.
I will not be supporting the Government on the new Anti-Terror Bill unless it can be severely amended.
Busy Summer I spent my summer recess from Parliament visiting a number of charities, businesses, schools etc, attending community events and supporting voluntary good causes. I also hold surgeries throughout the whole year.
