When people buy a lottery ticket they may not realise that they are part of the big society but I have recently discovered that they are. Although most people buy tickets in the hope of a life-changing win there is always a consolation when that does not happen that some good is being done for the community.
I recently saw two projects locally that have benefitted from the Big Lottery Fund which has allowed them to do that little bit more. The first of these is the Carers’ Centre in Radstock. It is an inspiring organisation that cares for the carers. These are the unsung heroes of domestic life who take a financial burden off the State and an emotional burden on to themselves by looking after friends and family who can no longer care for themselves. The Carers’ Centre assists partly by pointing people in the direction of welfare benefits and by providing moral support for those who often have a lonely task. It offers counselling sessions at the formal end of the scale and a cup of tea informally.
The other project I visited was the climbing wall in Writhlington. This adds to the amazing range of community facilities available at the school and crucially provides activities for young people outside school hours.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of both these projects was the determination and hard work of the organisers. Both groups had a small team of inspired individuals who work for the community but they need hard cash to do so – you provide this every time you buy a lottery ticket.
