Weekly Update 30/09/2010
Posted by Jacob Rees-Mogg, MP for North East Somerset, at 10:03, Thu 30 September 2010:
Recently a dinner was held in the Midsomer Town Hall to celebrate its 150th anniversary and the separation of the Norton Radstock Council into its constituent parts. Much work has been done to restore the Town Hall to pristine condition and the first floor room was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The balcony – minus dead pigeons – had been specially opened up and an appropriately celebratory meal was served.
It was an opportunity to give thanks to the past but also to look confidently to the future. I must confess to a certain irrational pride in the knowledge that my great, great grandfather William Rees-Mogg was involved with the building’s opening. 1860 would have been a year of great optimism and so should 2010. Midsomer Norton is fortunate to have a community committed to its success. It is the drive of Paul Myers and Chris Watt that achieved independence and it is local businesses – many involved with Rotary – who sponsored the evening’s success.
It is always the determination and generosity of individuals that makes things happen. However, they require a community in which to do it. Midsomer Norton is by no means alone in having this combination. I have seen it throughout the towns and villages of North East Somerset especially over the summer. It is a powerful force which has in the past led our nation to success. It comes from the grass roots and has little need of Whitehall, perhaps it ought to be called the Big Society.
