Volunteering
Posted by Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, at 08:15, Tue 21 September 2010:
During this week I am working as a volunteer with a number of local charities and organisations. This Volunteer Week came about as I want to support the important role of the volunteer in our community and raise the profile of Harrogate, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge based charities and organisations from the voluntary sector.
I am volunteering for a different charity or organisation every morning and afternoon. The voluntary work I am doing ranges from cleaning bird boxes, to helping the homeless, to supervising hand hygiene in Harrogate Hospital, to litter picking, to supporting the young and elderly, to delivering furniture, to helping those with a disability or simply lending a friendly ear.
My main hope for the week is that more local people will be motivated to volunteer. I want to make the point that anyone can volunteer regardless of their background, career or origin. Every volunteer makes a difference and I hope to make a difference to the people and groups I will be volunteering for throughout the week.
You can follow my week on my special blog at www.volunteerweek2010.wordpress.com.

Mmmm, interesting thought and who knows, currently i work in the public sector and the way the Con Dem government are persuing their unfair campaign on attacking my civil service pay, pension and finally changing the law on my redundancy package rights - who knows i and many others might find ourselves with plenty of time on our hands for volunteering in the near future.

I agree with Simon. Changing the law on redundancy packages because it was deemed to be unlawful in the high court? How can that be right?
