Weekly update 16/08/2010

Posted by Jacob Rees-Mogg, MP for North East Somerset, at 17:30, Thu 19 August 2010:

One of the great joys of being an MP is being invited to events in North East Somerset. Last weekend I went to the Clutton Flower Show which was a particular pleasure as my family has been going to it for many years. My father, who is now in his early eighties, remembers going as a small child when Lady Warwick , a close friend of Edward VII, often used to open it. This year I went with my wife Helena and our two elder children, Peter and Mary.

The name ‘flower show’ does not give a complete picture of the range of activities. The Police and Fire Brigade were there although the latter had to rush off with lights flashing. There was a display of vintage tractors, a variety of stalls and a bouncy castle which was a great hit with Peter and Mary. The show itself in the main tent is always of the highest standard, we greatly admired the roses and gladioli. Peter and Mary eyed the cakes which fortunately were not to be removed until 5pm. As always in an English Summer a rain shower came and went but everyone carried on regardless.

Through activities such as these the village of Clutton, which is not large, has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to restore and improve St Augustin’s Church. It is a picture of England and Somerset at its resilient best and a community I am honoured to represent.
