News from Your Local MP

Posted by Dawn Primarolo, MP for Bristol South, at 14:57, Fri 30 July 2010:

WELCOME!

Here’s the latest edition of my regular newsletter.

SUMMER RECESS

It has been a particularly busy couple of weeks in parliament with lots of legislation to consider as we approached the summer recess. Parliament has now risen for the summer with MPs returning to the House of Commons on 6 September, however, my diary for the next few weeks is already looking very busy because I will take the opportunity of not having to be in Westminster to spend more time than usual in Bristol South meeting local residents, community groups and businesses, and attending local events across the constituency.

“PLAYING FOR SUCCESS" PRESENTATION EVENT

I was delighted to attend a presentation event for local pupils at Bristol City Football Club last Thursday evening. The young people have all been involved in the after-school Playing for Success programme which is part of the national education scheme aimed at improving literacy, numeracy and IT skills using sport as a means to motivate the pupils. The study support courses being run by the Playing for Success Study Centre at the football club are very popular and the programme has a great track record of improving confidence, self esteem and academic performance.

BUSY POSTBAG

My constituency office has been receiving a large number of emails , letters and phone calls in recent weeks, many from local residents who are worried about losing their jobs as a result of Government cuts or losing a local public service which they value. I have been seeking answers to these concerns from Ministers in the Coalition Government. I’ve also been in touch with Bristol City Council on behalf of residents who have contacted me about a range of local issues including fly-tipping near the Malago river, grass verge cutting in Whitchurch and some anti-social behaviour problems.

SAINSBURY'S AT ASHTON GATE

As you have probably heard, the Council’s planning committee refused to grant planning permission for Sainsbury’s application to relocate its existing Winterstoke store to the current Bristol City Football Club site at Ashton Gate, despite planning officers recommending approval for the plans. While I do acknowledge that people have some concerns about the potential impact of Sainsbury’s plans (such as an increase in traffic) I am disappointed that the planning committee’s decision affects the football club’s new stadium plans and impacts on the approved plans for new housing and employment on the current Sainsbury’s site.

BRISTOL DRUGS PROJECT

Tonight I will be attending a Bristol Drugs Project event in central Bristol where I will meet with local professionals who work to reduce substance related harm in our city. I know that the lives of many of my constituents are affected by drug and alcohol abuse and I believe it’s important that support services are available to promote change in their lives.
