CUTS...IT’S YOUR CHOICE!

Posted by David Burrowes, MP for Enfield, Southgate, at 16:57, Fri 2 July 2010:

CUTS...IT’S YOUR CHOICE!

The scale of the record levels of public debt left by the previous Government mean that we do not have a choice about whether to make cuts in public spending. Any household knows that if you spend more than you have and keep using your credit card sooner rather than later you have to pay it back. The scale of the problem is that if we fail to act, within 5 years we will be paying out £70bn in debt interest a year – more than we spend on educating our children, policing our streets or defending our country. The Government has announced its plans to seek the opinions of the public to help cut government spending. Last week the government launched the first phase of its Spending Challenge. Every suggestion put forward will be considered and closely examined. I believe that this is a great opportunity for the people of Enfield to get involved in the difficult decisions which will be made in October.

The Spending Challenge is split into two phases; the first is asking six million public sector workers to share their ideas on how to save money, delivering more for less. These people are at the forefront of our public services and know what works well, where to cut waste and what we can do to spend money efficiently. This phase only lasts until Friday 9th July, so I encourage everyone working in the public sector to get involved and give their suggestions to www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/spendingchallenge

The second phase will be a wider public consultation to gain your views on what areas of spending should be cut and ideas as to how the government can work more efficiently. The website will be launched shortly and I will be meeting with constituents and welcoming suggestions through my website on www.davidburrowes.com

One cut the people of Enfield had no say in was the decision to cut prayers from the full Council meeting and substitute with poetry. This week I will be meeting a number of constituents in Parliament’s Central Lobby who will see inscribed on the floor words of poetry. May I make an early bid for its inclusion in the Council meetings? Psalm 127 v 1 : “Unless the Lord builds the House the labourers work in vain”.
