Hello everyone?!
Posted by Stella Creasy, MP for Walthamstow, at 19:45, Wed 30 June 2010:
It’s been a week since the new Government unveiled its budget. We now know their programme of cuts to public services and support for families will hit our community hard. I'm asking for your help to determine what I can do as our local MP to limit the damage this budget will cause to Walthamstow.
On the evening of Wednesday 14 July I will be holding a brainstorming session in Parliament to consider how we can practically help tackle the poverty this budget will create. Whilst we can’t prevent them cutting tax credits and local jobs, we can still take action.
We will be considering how we can support the work of our credit union, protest against high street loansharks and ensure free access to financial and insolvency advice as well as calling for national action on interest rates and banking practices. This will be an informal event with plenty of opportunities for your questions and to debate these issues with every participant. I promise there will be no boring speeches !
I hope you can join me on the evening of the 14th – please RSVP to stella@workingforwalthamstow.org.uk for venue and timing details so we can finalise numbers. If you can’t join us but would like to be part of this work please do let me know – let’s together form Walthamstow’s line of defence against this wreckless budget.

Dear Stella
Thank you for seeking our comments/observations and views on this. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend you session on the 14th, but I would like to suggest one idea.
It is likely that the budget cuts will impact hardest on ordinary workers. These are people who had no real influence in how this country has embraced a social economic ideology that seems to favour a small select group in our society, rather than the majority. And this is something that your party is as guilty of as the Conservatives.
Despite the failure of this ideology, it would appear that the poorest will now be expected to pay for the mess. I have yet to hear a straightforward argument as to why this should be so. So unless somebody can put forward a sensible reason as to why we should suffer the worst of this, I suggest that workers collectively oppose the cuts.
There is already a mechanism for workers to collectively oppose conditions that are imposed upon them, and that is action through a union. Is this something that you are prepared to support and encourage? I ask this as you are an MP that has aligned themselves to a party that is supposed to represent the best interests of the country’s labour force.
Many thanks.

Hi Stella,
Thanks for your message but I moved out of Walthamstow two years ago. I'm a bit concerned as to how on earth you have my e-mail details?
I imagine this has something to do with my having used a 'contact your MP' site when I did live in the Stow - but it seems a bit odd that you would be sending a mass spam and not checking if the people you are mailing are actually the intended recipiants? When I enter my details on an official government site I do so on the basis that the information will not be misused - I certainly expect it to be removed once there is no purpose in it being held.
Good luck with the cuts, but please remove my details from your mailing lists and pass on my feedback about the misuse of information.

Hi kevin and Catherine,
Thanks for your comments- I'll try to be brief in return!
kevin- you won't be surprised that I don't share your analysis Labour only has concern for elites and indeed I would urge you to explore further where the impact of our budget proposals published during the election would have impacted. As a member of one myself I do think unions play a vital role in representing working people; I also think in this instance the onus is on the Labour movement as a whole including the political party, the co-op movement (I'm a co-operative MP as well) and our socialist societies to highlight why this budget will be detrimental to our society. I'm certainly hoping to be able to work with a range of organisations and individuals in walthamstow to do just that in the months ahead!
Catherine- I don't have your email. I got sent an email by the hear from your MP service saying that there were a number of local residents who wanted to hear from me and had signed up to this service hence my posting! As a result I have no idea how to remove your email from the list so might be worth visiting the "hearfromyourmp" site to see if you can unsubscribe? sorry not to be able to help!
best wishes
Stella
